John SteerJohn Steer ‘71, ‘75 P’08

John Steer was elected to the Clemson Club Board of Directors in June 2009. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agronomy in 1971 and Master of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1975. He then went on to the University of South Carolina to receive his Juris Doctorate in 1978. John served as Federal employee for over 35 years as the Legislative Director and Administrative Assistant for Senator Strom Thurmond (1974-1986), and as the General Counselor and Commissioner/Vice Chair for the United States Sentencing Committee (1986-2007).

John is now retired and lives with his wife, Lynne, in Fairfax Station, VA. Of his favorite Clemson memory, John claims the 1981 National Championship game, stating, “Lousy, view-obstructed seats, but we were there!” John has been a member of the Clemson Club of Baltimore and Washington, DC for many years and as a new Board Member he hopes to increase event participation and grow membership. John and Lynne have two children: daughter, Meredith, who serves in the United States Air Force, and son, Derry (Clemson class of 2008) who is a graduate student and varsity cheerleader at Oklahoma State University.
